The idea of a “mainstream” diagnosis for people with autism is fading. With a growing understanding that the spectrum includes more than just severe language delays, many children fall under an umbrella term: Asperger’s syndrome or high-functioning autism. It doesn’t matter what type you have, but how it affects your daily life and interactions with family members and friends.

“RBT Renewal: How to Apply & Prepare” is a blog post written by the author, who has been diagnosed with autism. The article includes information on how to apply and prepare for RBT renewal.

To renew your Certification by RBT, you must complete a set of assignments. About a month and a half before your RBT expiry date, you should begin the renewal procedure.

You must complete a competence exam no later than 45 days before your expiry date.

In addition, the RBT renewal application must be completely filled out. Your application materials may be uploaded to your online BACB account once you pay the renewal price. You should get notification of your renewed certification within two weeks if your application is approved.

Certification by RBT

For paraprofessionals working in the area of behavior analysis, the registered behavior technician (RBT) qualification is required.

RBTs are in charge of providing behavior analysis services and interventions to clients directly. RBTs must maintain their certifications to indicate that they have up-to-date skills and understanding of behavior analysis best practices and interventions, even though they must always operate under the careful supervision of a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) or RBT supervisor.

Initial Certification by RBT is far more involved than The Renewal Methodology. In order to obtain initial certification, you must:

  • To be a legal adult, you must be at least 18 years old.

  • Obtain a diploma from a high school.

  • A background check must be passed.

  • Complete a 40-hour approved training program.

  • Pass a preliminary competence test.

  • Make an application for certification.

  • Take and pass the national Certification by RBT exam.

You may start working as an RBT as soon as you pass the national test. To keep your certification, you must have continuing supervision of your client work, follow the RBT ethical code, and renew your certificate on a regular basis.

Getting Your RBT Certificate Renewed

Your RBT certificate must be updated every year, according to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Your certificate will expire one year from the day you passed the RBT test or the date you last renewed your certificate. The precise expiry date may be seen in your online BACB account as well as on the Certificant Registry.

You should be able to renew your certificate if you have been undergoing regular supervision and have followed the ethical code. Because renewing your certificate takes time, it is important to follow the procedures of The Renewal Methodology carefully.

The Renewal Methodology

The BACB’s Registered Behavior Technician Handbook includes step-by-step guidelines for renewing your certificate. While you must renew your certificate every year, you cannot do it less than 45 days before it expires.

The timeline of The Renewal Methodology is as follows:

  • Complete a competence evaluation no later than 45 days before the renewal date.

  • After you’ve completed the evaluation, you’ll need to fill out the renewal application.

  • After you’ve finished your application, pay the $35 renewal cost and submit it.

  • You may have to wait up to two weeks.

  • A renewal notification will be sent to you through email.

The Renewal Competency Assessment is a tool that evaluates your ability to renew your license.

The Renewal Competency Assessment is a tool that evaluates your ability to renew your license. is required each year to ensure the ongoing proficiency of RBTs in performing critical behavior technician skills, explains the BACB. Because RBTs regularly perform hands-on activities with clients, the competency assessment is a valuable tool for ensuring a certain standard of care is being delivered.

The following are some of the most important aspects of the competence assessment:

  • A BACB-certified behavior therapist (BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D) who has completed the requisite eight-hour supervision training and is a recognized responsible assessor must conduct the assessment.

  • Although an assistant assessor may perform part or all of the assessment, the responsible assessor remains responsible for the assessment on a professional and ethical level.

  • It is not possible to complete the evaluation more than 45 days before the renewal date.

  • The evaluation might take place in one or more sessions.

  • It may be done in person, live via the internet, or by watching recorded movies created expressly for the purpose of assessing proficiency.

RBTs may exhibit their talents for dealing with clients during the competence evaluation. It isn’t a written exam, but rather an evaluation of how RBTs accomplish certain activities. RBTs may be assessed by having them do activities with a customer, roleplaying exercises, or a live interview.

What if I’m late for my recertification?

You still have the option to renew your certificate if you miss your renewal deadline for whatever reason. It is critical that you renew your certification as soon as possible, since if it is not renewed on time, it will immediately expire.

If the expiry date was less than 30 days ago, you just need to submit the normal renewal application plus a $50 late charge. If the expiry date has passed more than 30 days, you must reapply for certification and fulfill all current certification criteria.

RBT Renewal Preparation

In preparation for your RBT renewal, you must make sure that you have all of the documents needed to submit a completed RBT Renewal Application. To guide you through The Renewal Methodology, the BACB provides a renewal checklist with steps and tips for how to complete each part of the application process.

The following is suggested by the renewal checklist:

  • If required, update your BACB account’s name and contact details.

  • Examine the RBT Handbook, particularly the criteria for certificate maintenance.

  • Complete your competence assessment for renewal.

  • Complete the renewal application in its entirety.

  • Pay the renewal cost online or with a cheque sent to you.

  • In your online BACB account, upload all application papers, including the renewal application and your competence exam.

Once all of the above renewal steps have been completed, you just have to monitor your email and BACB account for any communication coming from the BACB. If more information is needed, you will need to submit it before your certification can be renewed. If no additional information is required, you just need to wait for an email that confirms your Certification by RBT has been renewed for another year.
